The CDC believed AIDS was a new condition caused by a new virus, called, in 1986, HIV. Other people believed AIDS was an old condition in a new demographic caused by immune system overload. I am in the latter camp but I also believe a virus called CMV played a major part in the collapse of the immune system and also took advantage of that collapse too.
I like the correlation you've found, but we still need a cause. Detecting genetic material, naming it a virus and attaching blame isn't the whole answer. There still had to be some kind of poisoning and/or bioweapon.
